The timing chain is a critical component but the 2.0t VAG engines also have issues with the intake camshaft failing. This is due to the oil screen becoming dislodged from the cam bridge, being injested into the camshaft through the spool valve and scoring the cam journals. A second issue is the early MK7 camshaft lobe for the high pressure pump and vacuum pump would break off causing a misfire or running issue when the fuel pump stops. VW has fixed the issue and offers revised camshafts that have corrected the problems. We can address this at the same time as a timing chain job if we see the oil screen missing from the cam bridge or excessive play in the camshaft adjuster (phaser).
