2012 VW Golf R GMP Project Car

This 2012 Rising Blue Metallic Golf R was purchased by one of our staff as a daily driver complete with Recaro child seat, part test car and occasional track day car to replace our 2010 “GMP Tribute Project” Golf GTI.

To start things out we added a set of H&R Coil-overs to get it down to the ground, 1.2" - 2.3" drop up front and 0.8" - 2.0" out back. After installation of the H&R setup it was time to head over to the alignment rack to get everything into spec. With everything good to go a set of 19" VMR 710’s wrapped in 225/35R19 Eagle F1 tires were mounted up and the Golf was taken for a spin.

With the change in altitude came time for a change of attitude. To do this a Miltek full turbo back exhaust system was ordered to add to the aggressiveness of the R. The cat-less downpipe was a big help in getting the exhaust out and away from the turbo to help keep EGT’s low while at the same time adding hp.  After the downpipe was installed the Miltek cat-back system was installed and the transformation was complete. To add to the performance gains of the new turbo-back exhaust an APR Stage 2 ECU Upgrade was performed. Now as stated before this car is also a test car and as part of that parts tend to come and go. In this case the Miltek cat-back was swapped out for the Remus cat-back system that resides on the Golf R now.  While the Remus cat-back was being installed a little extra attitude was also installed via a set of L.E.D. tail lights.

After a few weeks of driving came time to add some stop to all the go that the Golf R has. To do this a call was made to Brembo who were more than happy to send a pair of yellow 6 piston calipers and 350x34 72 vane two piece front rotors to replace the single piston floating calipers and vented 345x30 rotors.
