The driver of the car was 6'4" and we needed to get a seat that would fit him and offer the most safety. We chose the Recaro Hans XL which has the head halo bolsters. The challenge was getting this massive seat to fit inside the close quarters of the 997 with a cage. First we started by mocking up the sidemounts from Recaro and installing the seat. Unfortunately, the seat position sat way too high putting the helmets to the top of the roof. We removed the seat from the car and disassembled the Recaro side mounts from the seat. The Recaro side mounts were replaced with aluminum Racetech units that allowed us to adjust the seating position much lower. However, their side mounts came up too high and partially covered the lapbelt opening. So we removed the mounts and cut them down. Once the Racetech side mounts were in place, we were able to start figuring out a way to make it work with the requested sliders.
The owner of the car will be sharing driving duties with his crew so we needed to get everything working on sliders. Recaro has a low slider and we started with these. The factory brackets would not work with the extra wide Recaro seat so we had to fabricate a set. This presented yet another challenge as the width of the seat and side mounts made it impossible to fit on the sliders over the factory mount points. After a number of test-fits pulling the seat in and out, we were able to get a bracket mocked up. We added a second layer of steel to the brackets to be able to countersink the bolts, allowing us to overlap the mount points to get the right fitment. The brackets were initially tacked in place for fitment purposes but once confirmed, we removed the seat, disassembled the hardware again and welded the brackets 100% to ensure the maximum strength.
Once the driver side was done, we duplicated the process on the passenger side. The lower portion of the 6-point harness also needed a sub-mount bar. Due to the width of the seat, we had to fabricate one of these for both sides going off the dimensions of the new brackets and sliders.
The Porsche 997GT3 doesn't have a good spot to strap down without going through the wheels so we added some plates for mount points underneath.
The factory steering wheel was replaced with a Momo D-Shape steering wheel with quick release adapter. The horn buttons were important because this car was going to be driven on the street so w had to figure out a way to get the wiring seamlessly integrated so that when the stock steerign wheel was re-installed, non of the factory harness was damaged. We ordered a replacement connector from Porsche and spliced it into the Momo steerign wheel horn buttons. We also added a quick release connector to the wiring so that everything would work as intended.
The car had this AIM MyChron3 dash system in the car when our customer purchased it, but the system was in pieces and the wiring simply piled in the floor of the car. We mounted the datalogger unit under the dashboard, re-ran the sensor wiring under the carpet, mounted the dash to the steering wheel, and installed a relay on the power circuit so the system would switch on and off with the ignition.
