A standard vehicle has a conservative alignment setup from the factory. Camber is simply the tipping of the wheel to one side or another. Positive camber tips the top of the wheel outward and negative camber tips it inward. Imagine the front tire on your car was perfectly straight up and down with a vertical line going through your wheel perpendicular to the plane of the ground. Looking at the wheel head-on you would see the line is vertical - representing 0° camber. Most standard street vehicles have -0 to -1 degree of camber and performance models have -1 to -1.5 degrees. Racecars can have as much as -5 degrees of negative camber to give the cars ultimate grip.
Standard street/interstate driving balances the load across the entire contact patch of the tire. Spirited driving increases the load on the outer edge of the tire. Enthusiasts participating in track days with their street cars are pushing their vehicles beyond typical street driving and as you advance increasing speed through the corners, your tires may begin to show premature wear on the outer edge of your tires because the loads are transferred to the outside. We offer a track-day alignment package that offers both a solution to the premature wear in addition to increasing grip on the track.
Most street vehicle suspensions allow for a certain amount of adjustment. Prior to a track event, we will setup the car with the maximum allowable amount of negative camber. This will tip the tires inward and keep the outside tire shoulders off the ground until cornering, also increasing turn-in. Following the event, we reset the camber alignment to street specifications.
We also offer aftermarket camber kits that can be installed to get increased adjustability. This will allow us to dial in a perfect camber setting for maximum results. These camber kits increase the complexity of the alignment job and will add installation time.
