The Porsche Cayanne, Macan and Panamera share a number of things and leaking timing covers is one of them. The cause of this common issue is the factory timing cover bolts are made of aluminum. This is a great lightweight metal, but engine heat can weaken the bolts causing stretch and even snap off. Once this happens, the covers are no longer sealed tightly against the engine and oil begins leaking out.
Porsche released a TSB (Technical Service Bulleting) to upgrade to a steel bolt on the Cayenne. Fortunately, these steel timing cover bolts are interchangeable with the Macan and Panamera, in varying quantities based on the engine.
GMP Performance offers a service to replace the OEM aluminum timing cover bolts with the steel timing cover bolts. We also use an aluminum washer that prevents galvanic corrosion. There is an option for titanium bolts for those that prefer a bolt with no washer. The bolts can be replaced as preventative maintenance or as an upgrade during a complete timing cover reseal.
